The First Microwave

Imagine your life without a microwave. Scary thought isn't it. Well if it weren't for Dr. Percy Spencer, we would have a much harder time cooking just about anything. In 1946 while testing the magnetron, a new vacuum tube, Dr. Spencer noticed something odd. The candy bar in his pocket had melted. Intrigued he placed popcorn kernels next to the tube. He stood back and watched as the kernels began to pop and fly all over his lab. He began experimenting with different foods near the vacuum and noticed the same phenomena. Over the next few weeks he fashioned the boxed in look of our microwaves and trapped the microwave power, creating a high density electromagnetic field. He discovered that by placing food in the box he could raise the temperature of the food inside thus revolutionizing cooking!

  1. Wow! I think the microwave is one of the best inventions. Our daily routines are full of activity and the last thing we want to do is to wait for an hour for our food to cook. Dr. Percy Spencer is an incredible inventor. It’s interesting to see that one man’s accidental discovery happens to be one of the appliance’s that is in every kitchen today. The microwave has changed the cooking process for our society. One of the positive aspects of the microwave is that you are able to change the temperature to speed the process of cooking. Who doesn’t like the idea of less time in the kitchen and more time to play?

  2. It's amazing how a simple mishap can turn into a revolutionized idea. If Dr. Spencer hadn't wondered why his chocolate bar melted, we wouldn't have had the invention of the microwave as soon as we had. Growing up in a time where microwaves are readily available, I can't imagine not having one. It's so much easier to heat something in the microwave instead of placing it on the stove, or waiting for the oven to heat up. Great post. Short and to the point. Keep up the good work!

  4. I`m not among the fans of microwave! I haven`t heard about any specific researches but I think that it does something really bad to the food with its waves. Try it by yourself and you would notice the difference, especially when you warm up meats. With respect to technology there is no doubt that microwave made huge difference in people`s lives. Thanks to this technology people found another way to save time. There is no need to warm the food using the old fashioned way anymore; now we can do it much faster. This technological discovery also contributed to the character of today`s society; we costumed to do all on the run… Society becomes lazier each day when something new is invented, something that can discharge us from ‘extra moves’. Besides being a technology evolution and life changing machine, it is a piece of art of its kind. Simple ‘box’ that warms food… I wonder why Spencer made it a box shape and not something else.

  5. Cooking has been made so much easier since the microwave. Without it, many companies that market products which cook in under fifteen minutes wouldn't exist. No more tv dinners or simply defrosting a roll. However, I do wonder what scientific proof there is to the harm microwaves cause by the radiative waves used to warm up the food from within. As a kid, cooking with the microwave was my only option. But now, all utilities are used in the kitchen when preparing a meal.

  6. Its amazing how this has changed all of our lives. Microwaves are one of the big inventions in technology; there is no doubt about that. There are plenty kids that use microwave everyday, i remember i use to use it everyday after school because my parents weren't always home, microwaves have made cooking easier, there are many meals that you can buy in stores that you just have to put in the microwave for couple minutes and there are ready to eat.
