Researchers at the University of California, Berkley are experimenting with WiFi technology to make cars talk to each other and the road. The information systems in the cars interact with sensors in the road. Data about intersections and road conditions are transmitted via WiFi to cars within a localized area. Jim Misener a transportation safety researcher at UC Berkley says" the primary problem is the driver" of many road accidents and hopes to develop accident avoidance and information systems for cars of the future.
The U.S. Federal Highway Administration is researching this same type of communication which could lead to future Smart Roads. With future technological advancements in vehicles, the human factor could be taken out of the equation. Smart cars could receive information from the smart roads and avoid accidents, bad road conditions or inconvenient traffic jams . Read the complete article and see a video clip at the link below.
I cant wait for this technology to be available for the public. It would be like having your own free, personal chauffeur. I'm one of those people who never has enough time in the day, so I do really dangerous things on the road such as text, study for upcoming tests and look over stuff for work. Luckily I still haven't been in an accident, but its one of those worries that I constantly have in the back of my mind. Plus with this technology I can finally do the most dangerous thing of all, sleep while behind the wheel. The half hour drive from work to class will be perfect for a quick nap.
